Dudaklar, kimi insanlarda doğuştan yani ailesel olarak ince ve belirsizdir. Kimilerinde ise yaşlanmaya bağlı olarak dokuların erimesiyle incelir ve kırışarak dolgunluk ve diriliğini kaybeder. Dokuların gevrekliği ve dolgunluğunun azalması da yüzdeki deri, kas ve yağ miktarlarının azalması ve erimesi sonucudur.
Yüz derisi, yanaklar, boyun derisi, göz kapakları, kaşlar ve tabii ki dudaklar yerçekimi ile aşağı doğru sarkar. Dudakların sarkması sonucu, hastalar güldükleri ve konuştukları zaman alt dişler görünür hale gelir ki alt dişlerin görülmesi (dental show) yaşlılık ifadesidir. Gençlerde ise durum tam tersine, güldükleri ve konuştuklarında üst dişler daha görünür haldedir ve alt dişler görünmez. Bu da genç yüz ifadesidir.
