Kalp bir bina gibi düşünürsek: temeli (kalbin iskeleti), duvarları (kalbi oluşturan kas kitlesi- myokard), kapıları (kalp kapakları), pencereleri (doğum öncesi açık olan doğumsal delikler), elektrik sistemi (gerek sinir ve gerekse kendine has kaslarda oluşturulan uyarı ve bu uyarıların iletim sistemi), alarm sistemi (kalbin ağrısını hisseden sinir sistemi), dış etkenlerden korunmayı sağlayan muhafaza ve yalıtım sistemi (kalbin dış zarları-perikard ve yağ yastıkçığı), kendi kendinin beslenmesini sağlayan dolaşım sistemi (koroner damarlar) vardır.

Kardiyoloji hem kalbi hem de koordineli yapılarla ilişkisini inceler. Kalp hiç dinlenmeden sürekli çalışmakta olmasına rağmen bu hissedilmez. Olabilecek en küçük bir olumsuzluk ise çeşitli semptom ve bulgulara yol açabilir. Bu semptom ve bulgular bazen bölgesel olarak kalp çevresinde hissedilirken bazen de bayılma, morarma gibi tüm vücudu ilgilendirir.
