Mide balonu operasyonunda, hafif anestezi etkisinde endoskop yardımı ile mide içerisine sıvı veya hava dolu olan bir balon yerleştirilir. Bu işlem 15-20 dakika sürer. Bu şekilde midenin gıda alma kapasitesi azaltılır ve hızlı şekilde karnın doyması sağlanır.
Bu operasyon ile hastalar birkaç ayda 7-8 kilo verebilirler. Fakat balon vücutta 6 ay ile 12 ay arasında kalabilmektedir.

Günümüzde bu operayon yöntemi, etkisini yavaş yavaş kaybetmektedir. Balon, ameliyat olamayacak kadar riskli hastalıkları olan ya da süper obez kişilerde temel morbidobezite cerrahisine hazırlık olarak kullanılmaktadır. Vücut kitle indeksi 30-40 kg/m2 olan kişiler için ideal bir yöntemdir.
